The Festival of San Matteo (otherwise known as Saint Matthew) is on today in the minuscule but ever-charming vilage of Le Ghiare just outside of Levanto. This being our first year in Le Ghiare, I don’t know what to expect, but they’ve been cleaning out the church since yesterday. At the very least, I’ll be able to see inside the church, which has been in the little corner of the earth since the 1200s. The rest of the year it is locked up for lack of both priest and parishioners.
Will there be gattafin, the local speciality of deep fried vegetable pockets? Will there be wild boar? Will there be wine?
Let’s hope so.
